Objectives and Facts

This site is intended to explore the nature of Norwegian vernacular architecture* and its relationship to contemporary building. I will document both the traditional building techniques of Norway and the buildings of architects who understand and use vernacular construction in various ways. In addition I will focus on Sverre Fehn, a contemporary Norwegian architect, in an attempt to demonstrate the use of vernacular building techniques and ideas to construct buildings that go beyond four walls and a roof.

*Vernacular architecture consists of a variety of building types. Simply put, vernacular building is traditional building that was created by craftsman and not designed by architects.
